[OPINION] The Social Media Maze: Navigating Nigerian Teenagers' Online Lives

 By Timileyin Oriowo

As a digital native, I've witnessed the profound impact of social media on Nigerian teenagers. While it offers unparalleled connectivity and creative expression, it also poses significant risks. As a society, we must acknowledge these challenges and work together to empower our youth to navigate the online world responsibly.

Social media's dark underbelly includes cyberbullying, online harassment, and unrealistic expectations. A staggering 70% of Nigerian teenagers have experienced online harassment, leaving emotional scars and eroding self-esteem.

Moreover, social media's curated highlight reels perpetuate unattainable standards, fueling anxiety, depression, and low self-worth. The constant stream of information can be overwhelming, making it difficult for teenagers to distinguish fact from fiction.

However, social media also offers immense opportunities for learning, growth, and self-expression. It provides a platform for creativity, connectivity, and community-building.

To mitigate the risks and maximize the benefits, we must:

• Educate teenagers about online safety, etiquette, and digital literacy.

• Encourage open conversations between parents, educators, and teenagers.

• Implement effective monitoring and regulation of social media platforms.

• Foster critical thinking, media literacy, and emotional intelligence.

Parents, educators, and policymakers must collaborate to create a safe, inclusive, and empowering online environment. By doing so, we can equip Nigerian teenagers with the skills and knowledge to thrive in the digital age.

The social media maze is complex, but together, we can navigate its challenges and unlock its potential.

This opinion piece aims to spark a conversation about the impact of social media on Nigerian teenagers, highlighting both the risks and opportunities.
